How these names are built
Japanese surnames are exceptionally concentrated: the top ten cover roughly a tenth of the population, and the leading names - Sato, Suzuki, Takahashi, Tanaka - are each carried by well over a million people. Most of them are topographic, describing where the family's land sat: Tanaka is in the rice field, Yamamoto the base of the mountain, Kobayashi the small forest, Ishikawa the stone river. Something else worth knowing: ordinary Japanese families did not all have surnames before the Meiji era. Hereditary surnames were the privilege of the elite until the 1870s, when the new government made family names compulsory for everyone, and many households then took a local place name on the spot. That is why so many Japanese surnames are landscape words.

Why are Japanese surnames so concentrated?
Because a few thousand names cover nearly the whole country, and the top handful are extremely widespread. Sato, Suzuki and Takahashi alone account for tens of millions of people, a level of concentration far higher than in most European countries.
Did all Japanese families always have surnames?
No. Hereditary surnames belonged to the nobility and warrior class for centuries. Compulsory family names for everyone arrived with the Meiji reforms in the 1870s, and many families adopted a local place name at that point.
What do the most common surnames mean?
